Neighborhood
The Viaduct – Home to some of the city’s best bars and restaurants. You’ll also find the New Zealand Maritime Museum here, plus Silo Park, where you can catch free outdoor movies in the evenings. From the Viaduct you can hop on a ferry to the stunning islands of the Hauraki Gulf, like Waiheke, Tiritiri Matangi, and Rangitoto, or even head out on a whale and dolphin safari. Federal Street – Right next to the iconic Sky Tower (you really can’t miss it!). This street is packed with great eateries, cosy cafes, and lively bars. You can test your luck at Sky City Casino, enjoy a meal at the top of the Sky Tower with unbeatable views, or if you’re feeling adventurous, try the Sky Walk or even a jump! Aotea Square – Known as Auckland’s cultural hub. Around the square you’ll find the Town Hall, the Aotea Centre, Event Cinemas, and two beautiful theatres — The Civic and Q Theatre. The square itself is perfect for people-watching over a coffee, and in winter it comes alive with an ice rink. Albert Park, the Art Gallery, and the Museum – Albert Park is a peaceful spot to unwind with a book, right next to the Auckland Art Gallery on Wellesley Street. Keep walking past Auckland University and across Grafton Road and you’ll reach Auckland Domain, the city’s largest park. There you’ll find the Auckland War Memorial Museum and a stunning botanical garden. Karangahape Road (K Road) – Head up Queen Street and you’ll land on K Road, Auckland’s alternative nightlife strip. It’s full of bars, live music venues, shisha lounges, and cheap eats. Always something happening here! Ponsonby – Just west of the CBD, Ponsonby is known for its historic villas, boutique shopping, and upmarket dining. It’s one of the best areas in Auckland for foodies, whether you’re after trendy cafes, cool bars, or fine dining. And of course, Queen Street itself — the main strip through the city. It’s lined with shops, cafes, bars, restaurants, live music spots, and plenty more. Be sure to wander through High Street too, which runs parallel to Queen Street. It’s a little more relaxed (and often cheaper for shopping), with plenty of places to stop, eat, or people-watch. If you’re keen to explore further, head towards the Viaduct and you’ll find Britomart Transport Centre, where you can easily catch buses and trains to see more of Auckland.
